Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
27/02/09I bought this lens to be my main walkaround lens on a 1.6x crop camera.
For crop camera users I think the most vital decision if considering this lens is to work out whether it will be wide enough for you. My shooting style tends to veer away from the truly wide angle end and more towards short telephoto. I also usually pack a 10-22mm lens with me so the 28-135mm was a good choice. For the type of photography I was doing I could almost always work around the gap between 22 and 28mm by moving position.
Build quality is good but not quite up to L quality - but then it's not L money either. The zoom barrel feels slightly cheap and on my copy there seemed to be slight play in the zoom. Having said that the lens performed well in all areas. AF is quick and doesn't hunt, contrast and sharpness are good and the IS is helpful. I was concerned about the fact that the lens barrel extends when zooming. I thought it might attract a lot of dust and grit but it never did.
As with all Canon's mid-price lenses, this one does not come supplied with a lens hood. I really don't like Canon's policy in this area but I usually spend the money on buying one. It certainly helps in controlling flare and maintaining contrast.
This lens performed well for several years as my 'standard zoom' until I eventually upgraded to an L lens. I was sorry to see it go.
